Established in 1956, McMurdo Station is located on the southern tip of
Ross Island,
3500 kilometres
due-south of New Zealand. McMurdo Station is Antarctica's largest
community, with a winter population of about 200 and a summer population
of up to 1200. In addition to the
scientific research
carried out there,
McMurdo serves as the main logistics hub for much of Antarctica.
The
coins of McMurdo are private fantasy issues minted by
Mr
Fred Zinkann,
a member of the
Unrecognised States Numismatic Society
who has
pioneered the striking of coins in many
unconventional
metals. The
coins
were minted
in 1987,
to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the
International Geophysical Year.
